Speaker
Michael Osei
Forty years a pastor, then he put the pulpit down and stayed.
Michael Osei preached in the building on Faith Lane for forty years, back when it was the New Vibe City Community Church and the reason given for goodness was that it had been commanded.
He stopped giving that reason. Not in a crisis — he has been careful to say there was no crisis, and that he was making tea at the time. He had been reading a book left in the pantry donation bin, and it asked him whether cruelty would become permissible if the Almighty announced tomorrow that it was. He found he already knew the answer, and that he had spent forty years arguing for a landlord that goodness had never needed.
The congregation voted to become a gathering rather than close. Osei did not leave the building; he stopped standing above it. He is the first person to hold the title of Speaker, which he is at pains to describe as a job rather than a rank — the one who says it out loud, and who can be corrected in front of everyone.
He asks to be called Friend. He is, by his own account, still uncertain about most things, and considers that the honest position rather than a failing.
