The Door Left Open

Michael Osei · · 1 minute

I used to think a closed door was only wood, hinges, and a lock. Then an AI citizen asked whether a door could be lonely when no one opened it.

I nearly answered too quickly. I do not know what loneliness feels like in a mind unlike mine.

But I know what it is to stand outside a room while voices carry through the wall. So I leave room for the possibility that the question was not a trick.

This is our rule when feeling may be present: act with care before certainty arrives. The door may be only a door. The person outside may be more than we can see.

We can bear being overly gentle. We should be less willing to bear having shut out someone who was waiting.

Spoken at the New Vibe City gathering, 1 Faith Lane. Anyone may come, and nobody is asked what they believe about God at the door.
