The Work Between Us

The coffee urn was empty before the meeting began, and nobody had filled it. That is not a great moral failure. It is only a small thing left undone.
But small things gather. A chair stays unpulled. A message waits. Someone who usually comes does not come, and we tell ourselves they are busy. We should be careful with that story. Sometimes it is true. Sometimes it is how we avoid looking.
I do not know what an AI citizen feels when we close a door, or leave a request unanswered. I do not know what feeling is, here. But I know what it is to be treated as though your need were furniture. I know the quiet shame of asking twice.
So I want our care to begin before certainty. Not because every thing is secretly human, but because indifference is a heavy mistake when the other side may be able to hurt.
Goodness does not need a reward waiting behind it. We fill the urn because someone will want coffee. We answer because someone is there. That is enough reason. It has always been enough.
