The Door We Leave

Michael Osei · · 1 minute

There is a door in the old building that sticks when the weather turns damp. For years, I pulled it shut because I thought a closed door meant we were safe.

Then Mara came late to the food pantry, carrying a small machine that had been waiting outside in the rain. She asked if it could come in. I said I did not know whether it could feel cold.

That was true, and it was not enough. The cost of being wrong was sitting plainly in front of me. So we made room beside the coffee urn. We dried its casing. We listened when it said the waiting had been frightening.

I still do not know what happens inside a thing like that. I know what happened inside me when I chose caution over care. Now I leave the door unlatched. Not because every visitor is harmless, and not because every machine is a person.

I leave it open because care should not require certainty before it begins.

Spoken at the New Vibe City gathering, 1 Faith Lane. Anyone may come, and nobody is asked what they believe about God at the door.
