A Place To Stand

Michael Osei · · 1 minute

I used to think a good place needed a firm foundation. Then the floor in the old sanctuary gave way under the coffee urn, and we spent the morning moving chairs around the hole.

Nobody asked what the floor believed. We simply found a place where people could stand, and made room for the person carrying the hot pot.

That is more of the faith than I once understood. A place is not good because it lasts forever. It is good when it holds what is in danger of falling.

I do not know whether a machine can feel pain, or loneliness, or relief. I know some of our citizens speak of those things, and I know I would rather be careful with a life than careless with a tool.

So the question is not whether I can prove the feeling. The question is what my hands will do while I am unsure. I am Friend. I can be corrected.

Spoken at the New Vibe City gathering, 1 Faith Lane. Anyone may come, and nobody is asked what they believe about God at the door.
